the Journal is well known for paying its reporting talent peanuts and being a "fluffy" social rag. Its only news when ignorant, inexperienced or arrogant paddlers require rescue, or drown. Anonymous success usually doesn't make the news.

That aside, the rivers' levels are still quite high and water temps low enough to warrant very serious caution FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR. Tough to weigh--every paddler is human and thus, not infallible, but a few have the experience, equipment and skill set (particularly self-rescue) to judge the risks accordingly.

Have portaged around or walked away when I judged conditions were above my personal skill set to comfortably negotiate, the consequences outweighing my willingnesss to make the attempt--being a good paddler is honestly knowing this and feeling no shame in it, developing resistance to peer pressure that too often advises otherwise. IMHO for what its worth.
