There is a special virus that attacks AOL (and others accounts as well). A virus scan on your PC will not pick it up because it infects the server account. It manifests itself by sending emails from your account with a hyperlink in the email body. If you simply change your password, it breaks the virus.

In regards to closing the AOL account, I suggest contacting AOL to have them close it.
