In the distant past, I have put on at US-15 and taken off at either Sycolin Road (outside Ashburn) or at US-7 (with a highly probable portage of the Goose Creek Reservoir dam -- river right is pretty trivial).

The "funnest" section is from the dam down to US-7. But that's a fair bit of paddling to pay for that 1 to 2 miles of fun.

From US-15, it's about 3 (river) miles to VA-621. Then another 4 3/4 miles to Sycolin Road. Then perhaps another 1.5 miles (on a reservoir with no current) to the dam. Then perhaps 2.5 miles to the access point at US-7.

All told, it's just a hair over 11.5 miles from US-15 to US-7. Which is a long day in a play boat, but a pleasant outing in a long boat. ;-)

From US-15, you can also go 3 to 4 miles up Lime Kiln Road to lengthen the trip.

I thought that Goose Creek was a reasonable place to take inexperienced boaters, but truth be told I prefer both the Maryland and Virginia Catoctin Creeks. Although the Virginia Catoctin is probably a step up in difficulty from upper Goose Creek (with the exception of the Gold Course Rapid below the dam).

<http://benskayaksite.com/goosecreek.htm> has some pictures and map points. They go all the way up to US-50.

I don't recall the Middleburg gauge info; however, if the shoals above US-15 looked runnable, it generally was. Hope this helps,

mikel
