Harpers Ferry is actually in a spiral down currently. Now Weaverton crossing is posted as CSX only, no public access. Lock 34 on the Potomac[ Needles] is blocked off. Sandy Hook is off limits, although we will continue to use as needed. Potoma Wayside has 5 legal parking spots, although Alf Cooley, Barb Brown looking into having an off season parking access[ November 1- April 1] @ Potoma Wayside.
Harpers Ferry Adventure Center holds the key to the whole private boater situation, private take-out, shuttle in the tube trailers, boat back to your car. Boaters will come from all across the Mid Atlantic, as they used to do back when shuttle wasnt an issue here. Boaters will camp, eat, drink, their families will zip line, mountain segway, tube, high ropes, and utilize the new brewery going in. Literally hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue are being lost each season, as the outfitters want to gouge boaters to access the river with a daily, outrageous fee, or a rip off season pass. Our Park Service, local DOT, CSX, C&O Canal and any other govt organization you can think of have this whole situation so tied up right now, its a joke. AW, where are you when we need you? We have two of the classic rivers on the east coast for novice boaters to hone their skills on, and when they run wild, the surfing is truly world class. We are all missing out, due to some poorly managed access and cooperation between agencies locally. I petition we bring the Doah and Potomac back to the way it was, and while were at it, how bout hourly limits, and total daily limits on tubers allowed to be released between all of the outfitters here in the Ferry? We have tons of wildlife here negatively impacted by the literal masses of humanity released everyday, not to mention the trash they leave dispersed all over the rocks of the Potomac, or floating down the river.
If no limits are going to be imposed, then we need a Harpers Ferry Park Service River Ranger Patrol to be implemented. We locals are tired of policing these dip-shits in do-nuts.......
Rant over!!!
