Scouting the UG ?

Are there are any not too complicated or brutal ways to get to spots on the UG that would give me a decent idea if it's the kind of thing I want to run or no way in HE-double hockey sticks I should be on? I might have a bit of extra time on Friday to drive down that way.

Of course I will be asking around too.

I've only see the UG once when I rafted it in a big pig of a raft with a bunch of boating buddies during Gauley Fest. I'm trying to imagine Sweets and Insignificant with less than 10% of the water and hardly any people.
