The way the story goes, the Axiom was supposed to be the " new improved rpm" when it came out (around 2010?) and they were supposed to discontinue the RPM. Too many people still wanted their RPM's so they kept producing them.
Fast forward a few more years and people actually started liking the old school play characteristics of the axiom. Especially for the larger paddlers, since the RPM Max wasn't as slicey as the smaller rpm whereas the larger Axiom is practically designed for epic stern squirts.
So, the rpm still has great legs and different boats fit different people in all different sorts of ways so go with whatever works best for you.
