Yeah, that's kind of how I've always felt.

My canoeing started in 1980 (age 9) in the boundary waters, but I didn't meet any rapids over Class 1 until around 2005. Hell, portaging was an outright source of pride for years (lake to lake). A feat of strength for bragging.

That said, fanatical whitewater people (the kind you expect to talk to on this message board and see on mid-atlantic rivers) come to the board with quite a different perspective.

Still like to exercise that portage option when things look nasty.
