To answer some of your questions. Straight shafts are less expensive and provide and allow more choices in where you hold the paddle. I have both and stick with my straight shaft paddles. When transitioning from a straight shaft to a bent shaft, drop the feather down 15 degrees to get a comparable feel (45 --> 30).

From 45 degrees on down, use the feather angle that's most comfortable for YOU. Try dropping in increments: 45, 30, 15, 8 until you find a feather that feels really comfortable and stick with that.

Shaft diameter is also worth thinking about. If you have small hands, get a narrow shaft. The Werner Paddles website has an excellent tool to assist you in choosing both the correct paddle length and shaft diameter.

Hope this helps.
