If all you have is 75 foot thick diameter throw bag and first aid kit with Ed and Ed "leads" people down stream, he will be down stream of your possible pin.

Ed is a great paddler and a great trip leader, but that puts him in a hard position - the baby sitter.

How about everybody just carry a small throw bag in their boat, and a few carry a light first aid kit? A small throw bag and a small first aid kit weighs less than my lunch and Gatorade and I carry them in a -6' playboat with minimal weight penalty. The biggest problem is if my Gatorade bottle gets loose nuts me during vertical fun.

You are talking about a relatively small class -III river. The biggest issue on the Bloomington is really the water temp. Carry a small throw bag and dress correctly - let Ed enjoy the paddle.
