Corbett's ratings were badly inflated

when the books were written. What he routinely called Class IV were barely Class IIIs to the rest of us.

In part this was due to the way he paddled--his techniques, etc were antiquated in the 70s. He didn't have float bags and had no concept of breaking rapids into pieces by catching eddies.

Still, his guide books got us to many rivers--you just didn't rely on them on the river.
