Fishing line & hooks - a hazard for paddlers

Line is indeed a hazard for wildlife, but hooks are a hazard for boaters.
I once got hooked on the 'Doah and it was no fun.
Many times I've seen line hanging from tree limbs on creeks, often with hooks attached that can spring and catch boaters when they hit/stretch the lines. I've got quick access to my river knife now and always cut the hanging lines when I can. I also carry some forceps and a small multi tool that can cut hooks in case I need to remove a hook from skin - just like the fisherman/MD who accidentally hooked me on the Doah did. He was aghast; I thought it was funny. Fortunately, he had a bottle of whiskey to help disinfect the puncture and provide an anesthetic.
He pushed the barb though to the other side of my back then clipped it off and pulled the hook out. No big deal - but a hook in the eye or face could have been worse.
Bottom line: beware of fishing line; and cut it or remove it when you can.
