Not sure about the current conditions, check surf forecast up to a couple days before heading out.
A couple feet would be fine.

We've had great times there surf kayaking at the groin, but be very considerate of the surfers. Using a paddle makes it much easier to catch slower, flatter waters and catch good waves more consistently. So, make sure you are not a asshat and hog the wave just because you can.

Be careful and don't open you eyes underwater in the shallows if you flip; you'll get sand in your eye.
