using a paddle as a third leg when having to walk in swift water is just one basic technique often taught.
i was @ the staircase one time when a paddler had a heads down foot entrapment. the nearest boater ran up some rocks and handed him her paddle which he was able to use to better stabilize and eventually self rescue. she had just taken the basic swift water course.
