Oh, and I like to hold onto the paddle.

My personal experience has been that holding one should hold onto the paddle if at all possible. Even out of a boat, I can paddle myself to safely better than I can swim. I'm not sure if that is true for everyone, or if it applies to a one-bladed rafting paddle. What do you think?
