Was your name & phone number on your paddle??

A few years back my boat & paddle were stolen one October at Violettes Lock. The Kevlar boat was found abandoned, in short order, but without the paddle. (Apparently the thief quickly discovered that a C-1 can be more challenging and less fun than a kayak.)

The following spring I received a collect call -- according to the mystified operator -- "From Your Paddle". Would I accept the charges??
"YES, INDEED". It had been found by some teen-agers, abandoned in the woods off a trail, a ways from where the boat had been discovered in the fall. I actually may still have that paddle.

The moral is: immediately mark ALL boating gear with identification. Swims happen . (Actually this incident was not a swim but a picnic lunch nap... but the principle holds!0
