It's much easier adding skid plates on a nice uniform surface. Sanding doesn't take much effort at all. Well attached skid plates avoid dents as well.

Talking to BMO the past weekend, the current trend is two straps for each leg or a pre-built saddle. BMO is well worth the trip if you want a truly professional job.
