In some streams the water table is at the surface at the stream bed. In those situations groundwater may seep into the stream in a more diffuse way than a spring boiling out of the ground. Streams with strong groundwater influence are warmer in winter and cooler in summer and usually hold higher water levels during dry conditions than other nearby streams that are not strongly influenced by groundwater.

I live at 450 ft of elevation in a neighborhood called "Springview" in Jefferson south of Frederick. There are numerous springs at similar elevations in this area where the landscape is sloping down from the blueridge toward the Potomac. The springs start as wet spots and within a hundred yards or so down slope they are small streams with flowing water, but there are no obvious springs with water upwelling.

In the local area the groundwater is at around 52 degrees so it is much warmer than the air in winter but we have no hot springs.
