Wetsuits back in the early 80's were thicker than they are typically now. Back then, I was a very frequent Winter paddler. You still need something to break the wind over the wetsuit but it worked exceptionally well below freezing. To add extra warmth, I added a thin layer of polypro under the wetsuit.

Don't get me wrong, I prefer the comfort of a drysuit but wetsuits have certain advantages as well. If you tear a gasket on the drysuit, it doesn't work too well. You can really tear up a wetsuit and it will still function quite well at keeping you very warm. This fact as well as maintenance is why many Fire Dept rescue squads use wetsuits even today.
