Joe, I would definitely recommend a SB if you can find it, I think you will be happier in the long run. I also would say that a hypalon boat is better if you don't have somewhere to keep it inflated when not in use (from what I understand, the PVC boats like Maravias develop holes at creases when rolled much faster than a hypalon boat like a Hyside). I personally like PVC boats better as they seem a bit stiffer but I have a Hypalon Rio Bravo that has done just fine in all types of whitewater (from the Rogue River to the Upper Gauley), probably isn't all that important. My personal favorite brand is Maravia but I couldn't afford that so Hyside it was, no holes yet from rolling (keep it inflated when I can though) and it is around 10 years old. I just have a paddle setup and wish I had an oar rig both for western rivers or for rafting with folks who may not want to paddle (don't know how your kids feel about it). Also, I have several friends who purchased used rafts with oar rigs and trailers, sweet packages, would be nice to have if possible in my opinion.
My two cents, hope it helps.
