Here are some thoughts -
Having the unique position of having both boats in the fleet I can say they are both great boats. Here is what I think is different about each.
- Mamba - Flat hulled, soft edges, easy to roll, less rocker, lower cockpit rim just behind seat. Paddles great as a creek boat, but for me feels better as a cushy river runner.
- Flying Squirrel - Faster and longer. Rounded displacement hull, no edges, yet carves great. Feels lighting fast, almost too much speed sometimes. My current favorite boat. Easy to roll too, but all boats are good rollers if your roll is sound. More volume in stern. Kind of the best of the remix with the bluntness and beefiness of the stomper. Requires more stern draws if you need to correct.
If landing in a foreign country to paddle and was handed either boat I think I would be very happy with either one. If running bigger pushier higher volume maybe the Mamba might be nice with its flat hull to skip over things. If running pushy creeks and the potential for drops, then the Squirrel. I am splitting hairs here, both boats would be fine in either arena.
Have the 8.5 mamba and the Squirrel for demo if you need to try them. For comparison the 8.6 mamba is would compare to the Squirrel 95. If paddling the mamba 8.1 then the Squirrel 85.
Hope that helps and gives you a bit of info to get started with.
